Practical Aquaponics- An Introduction.

Practical AquaponicsAquaponics is basically a combination of two words, aquaculture and hydroponics.

The word aquaculture, as it’s pretty clear from the term itself, is the growing of the aquatic life in a well maintained environment and hydroponics is the production of plants.

In this system the benefit of both plants and animals is shared or simple enough a relationship known as symbiosis can be said to take place between them in which the sharing leads to the mutual benefit.

This process is now used by many countries which need to grow plants without using much water and soil.

This system is gaining popularity these days because of its working and guaranteed results. The aquatic animals like fish help supply the essential nutrients to the plants which return the favour by cleaning up the water for the fish and make it pure enough for them to live clean, as a result an environment supporting both the fish and plants is created which helps in the growing of plants and fish as well.

The plants only help in cleaning the water for the aquatic life and the provision of food is monitored by the  provision of  the food to the aquatic life is the job of people who are actually monitoring the system ,plants only clean the water for them.

Though there are two separate systems depending on each other are being operated but we don’t call them separate systems, instead these are termed as a single system known as aquaponics.

This system is based on medium to large size tanks supported by pipes for the supply of water to the plants fish water is pumped to the Gravel Beds, and is evenly distributed by a simple system of pipes.

The water which is used to grow fish becomes toxic due to the wastes of the aquatic animals, when supplied to the plants it is cleaned up by the gravel beds and is re-supplied to them which is again used up by the fish.

The whole cycle is repeated, the plants keep on using the contents as nutrients and tend to supply the clean water to the plants and this whole process is repeated again and again.

The plants that are grown in this system are spinach and other leafy vegetables, onions, tomatoes; beans, peas, strawberries etc. The choice of the fish depends upon the climate of the area where the system of aquaponics is being operated. People generally prefer fresh water fish but this system also supports the growth of the ornamental fish.

This system is considered the best in many ways but the most appreciated method of clean water supply to the fish is really awesome which helps to ensure the proper, chemical free growth of the fish.

Water is the basic necessity of life and the usage of water in this system is in a controlled manner which reserves the water which can be used for other basic purposes. The water loss is also in a small amount and it’s either lost by the transpiration or during the recycling process that too is very minimal.

Consider the growth of crops by the typical farming which involves plowing, planting and then harvesting; with the increase in the technology the problem is resolved to a large extent.
